A collaboration between Full Stride Spine & Sport Chiropractic and PRESS Modern

Summer Was Great. Your Posture... Maybe Not.

Summer has a way of changing our routines. Between traveling, working remotely, weekends away, and simply spending more time outside, many of us get a welcome break from the same desk, chair, and commute we’re used to during the rest of the year.

Then September arrives.

Suddenly, it’s back to hours at a desk, carrying a laptop around the city, commuting, and spending much more of the day looking at screens. And with that return to routine, we often see the return of familiar complaints: tight shoulders, stiff necks, headaches, lower back discomfort, and sore hips.

At Full Stride Spine & Sport Chiropractic, we see firsthand how these everyday habits can affect the way the body moves and feels. And because muscles and joints don’t work independently of one another, we believe addressing both can be an important part of getting people moving and feeling better.

That’s why we’re collaborating with our neighbors at PRESS Modern Massage to talk about what happens when desk life returns—and how chiropractic care and massage therapy can work together as part of your back-to-work reset.

Why the Transition Back to Desk Life Can Be So Hard on Your Body

Our bodies adapt to how we move—or don’t move.

Long periods of sitting can reduce circulation, shorten hip flexors, create tension through the neck and shoulders, and place additional stress on the spine. Even the best ergonomic setup can’t completely offset hours spent in one position.

Many people don’t notice the effects immediately. Instead, tension gradually builds over several weeks until everyday discomfort becomes harder to ignore.

The good news? You don’t have to wait until you’re hurting to take action.

Massage Therapy Helps Your Body Reset

Massage therapy can be an effective way to counteract some of the physical demands of desk work.

At PRESS Modern Massage, Licensed Massage Therapists focus on identifying areas of chronic tension, improving mobility and circulation, and helping muscles recover from repetitive daily stress.

Whether you’re dealing with tight shoulders from typing, headaches associated with neck tension, or stiffness after long workdays, regular massage can help address areas that are doing more work than they should.

And while relaxation is certainly one of the benefits, massage therapy can go beyond simply helping you unwind. The goal is to help your body move and function better so you can feel better throughout your day.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help

Sitting can absolutely contribute to issues such as poor circulation, shortened hip flexors, neck pain, and back pain. However, it can also create changes at a deeper level within the joints.

If your hips and spine are flexed forward for long periods of time, they can begin to feel “stuck” in those positions. The spine functions somewhat like a system of gears: if your low back is curling into flexion, your chin may jut forward to maintain your line of sight.

This is one way neck discomfort and headaches can begin to develop.

If joint dysfunction isn’t addressed, the surrounding muscles may have a harder time fully relaxing. Muscles cross joint spaces to create movement, so if a hip is consistently held in flexion, for example, the hip flexors may continue working within that restricted pattern.

At Full Stride Spine & Sport Chiropractic, we use chiropractic adjustments and joint mobilizations to help improve joint movement and address these restrictions.

And while an ergonomic chair or standing desk can certainly help, equipment alone isn’t always the long-term answer. Even “perfect” posture held for hours is still a static position.

Ultimately, our bodies need movement. That can mean getting up from your desk more frequently, exercising to improve strength and mobility, receiving massage therapy to address muscular tension, and working with a chiropractor to improve joint function.

Massage + Chiropractic: A Better Back-to-Work Strategy

Massage therapy and chiropractic care address the body from different—but complementary—angles.

Massage can help address muscular tension and soft tissue restrictions, while chiropractic care can focus on joint mobility and movement patterns. Together, they can provide a more comprehensive approach to the aches, stiffness, and movement restrictions that often come with long hours at a desk.

And with Full Stride Spine & Sport Chiropractic and PRESS Modern Massage located under the same roof in Williamsburg, incorporating both into your routine is especially convenient.
